Aunt Beulah Mitchell Paterson

November 19, 1908 - April 10, 2011

With regret, the Mitchell and Paterson families announce the passing of Beulah Mitchell Paterson on April 10, 2011 at Fenelon Falls in her 103rd year. Beulah, born on the Mitchell farm near Fenelon Falls in 1908, was the dear daughter of Louisa and Fletcher Mitchell and younger sister to twin brothers George and William. Beulah remembered with fondness her happy and carefree childhood and teenage years when family and friends were close by. As a result, family ties were important to her all her life.

Beulah met and married James Graham Paterson also of Fenelon Falls and they made their home in Toronto where Jim managed the City Hall Branch of the Bank of Commerce. For many years in Toronto they enjoyed curling and lawn bowling at the Granite Club as well as many other social and cultural events but each weekend they returned to Fenelon Falls to visit with their families and spend time at their cottage on Cameron Lake. Many nieces and nephews were the lucky recipients of a week in the city or a few days at the cottage or a swim on a Sunday afternoon.

Upon retirement, Beulah and Jim made their home in Fenelon Falls where Beulah enjoyed many years close to her family doing the things she loved....painting, gardening, needlework, the annual trip in search of spring flowers, entertaining friends and family, attending church with her brother Bill and visiting the farm where she was born. Beulah passed along her love for flowers, cats and needlework to her many nieces and nephews....no one could make African violets bloom like she could.

After over 50 years of marriage, Jim passed away, but Beulah continued on in her own home for many years with the support of family and caregivers. She kept up a keen interest in family and current events. Beulah valued her independence and courageously maintained it well into her nineties.

The last few years of her life, Beulah lived in Fenelon Court where she made friends with her caregivers and fellow residents, graciously receiving many visitors while looking forward to trips and special family occasions at the beloved Mitchell farm. Beulah had a sharp and far reaching memory and was the link to family history. Her stories about the past helped her family understand its heritage.

Left to remember Beulah is her brother-in-law Murray Paterson and his wife Marjorie, as well as nieces and nephews, Sharon Phelps, Rosemary Teed, Richard Mitchell, Margot Mitchell, Kathryn Beek, Mary Grace Milton, Ruth DeJonge, Rosella Thompson, Roch Paterson, James Raymond Paterson and Dawn Bernasch. One nephew, Kenneth Drummond is deceased. Aunt Beulah also leaves 20 great-nieces and great-nephews and three great-great nieces.

The family of the late Beulah Paterson will receive friends at the Jardine Funeral Home, Cremation & Tribute Centre, 8 Princes' St. W., Fenelon Falls (1-866-453-9277) on Thursday, April 14, for visitation from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., with funeral service on Friday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Fenelon Falls Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations to Fenelon Court Resident's Council, Hospital for Sick Children or the Human Society Kawartha Lakes would be appreciated by the family. On-Line Condolences, memorial donations or to light a memorial candle please visit: www.jardinefuneralhome.com

The families sincerely thank all those who cared for and visited Beulah so faithfully. Those special efforts brightened many of her days.

Recently Beulah said that she would ''miss the family fun and special times''. Her absence after so many years with us is hard to imagine, but in our hearts we will remember her forever.
